On February 22, 2010 a delegation of Tatarstan, headed by the Minister of Economy, Prof. Dr. Marat Safiullin, met with iconvienna President Dr. Gerhard Hrebicek in Vienna, to prepare for iconvienna 2010, the 6th European Business & Investment Forum, taking place in April in Vienna. The next three days were devoted to intensive talks on the strengthening of economic relations between Tatarstan and Austria.

The autonomous Republic of Tatarstan lies in the centre of the biggest industrial area of Russia. With 3.8 million inhabitants and an area of 68,000 km2 Tatarstan counts to the richest and economically most advanced regions of Russia with high degree of independence.

At the meetings with high-level representatives of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management; the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth; the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber; Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Austria, Minister Safiullin presented Tatarstan as a “region of opportunities”. Concrete discussions where held on joint ventures and project investments in the areas of agriculture, energy and tourism - also with regards to the Universiade 2013, which will be hosted in Kazan.

“These meetings were only the beginning of a strategic partnership for the promotion of the economic relations between Tatarstan and Austria,“ stresses Mr. Hrebicek.

„We are looking forward to further cooperations and our next visit to Vienna on the occasion of iconvienna 2010 in April this year. Our primary goal is to sign concrete project close-out agreements,“ complements Minister Safiullin.

“We are very interested to intensify economic relations and to gain Austrian know-how, especially in the feelds of agriculture, energy efficiency, infrastructure, tourism and the modernisation of our industrial enterprises. We have developed state development programs for specific ‘priority projects’ in these areas. Such projects are co-financed by the Republic of Tatarstan up to 50%.

One of our aims is to cooperate with iconvienna on the establishment of regular “business missions”. Interested business representatives from Austria shall be invited to Tatarstan in order to be able to inform themselves on site about diverse business opportunities and to promote business projects between companies of both countries,” addresses Minister Safiullin local companies.
